Learning Area: Literacy - Reading

Learning Observed
Nicole has been reading with me over the course of Term 1. She has been working on her knowledge of letter sounds to decode unfamiliar words. Nicole has also been discussing the text and retelling it in her own words. Today Nicole completed a PM Benchmark Reading Assessment with me and read a Yellow Level 8 text. She recognised many high frequency words in the text, read with expression and some fluency; searching for print details and self-correcting an error.
Evidence of learning
Nicole scored 87% on word accuracy with 14 errors and 1 self-correction, but struggled to finish reading the text. She answered 80% of the comprehension questions correctly. Nicole frequently got ‘b’ and ‘d’ mixed up.
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
Nicole is developing her Capabilities in Reading and with some support, is starting to Think more about what she is reading to ensure that it makes sense. She is increasing her ability to decode unfamiliar words (Using Language, Symbols and Text) and tries to Connect what she is reading to her own life experiences.
