9th May Narrative Assessment - Writing
Learner: Nicole Learning Coach: Talia Morgan Date: 9th May 2016
|
Learning Area: iDevelop - Writing (Daily 5)
|
Learning Observed
|
Today Nicole was caught doing some #Oresome learning! As Nicole didn’t have a guided workshop to attend, she knew she needed to complete one of the Daily 5 tasks. She had already ‘read to self’ and ‘read to someone else’ during iRead and the previous workshop rotation. Nicole decided she would like to ‘work on words’, so she did some writing. She wanted to copy out one of the books she was reading into her writing book. Nicole wrote; “The Race” and then ‘ “No! We’re going to win.” ‘, repeatedly; with the last one reading -
‘ “No!” “We’re are going to win.” ’.

Evidence of learning
|
Nicole is showing how she can be a capable and collaborative, independent learner. Who will she collaborate with next?
|
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
|
Nicole is developing her Capabilities in writing. She was able to Collaborate with another learner to share a book and write part of that story out (Relating to others). Nicole selected and started an activity by herself (Managing Self). She continued to do her writing without any learning coach support (Participating and Contributing). Nicole was using speech marks, capital letters and full stops correctly when writing her story from the book (Using Language, Symbols and Text).

Narrative Assessment - iExplore - 23 Mar 2016
Learner: Nicole Learning Coach: Miriam Kamsteeg Date: 23 Mar 2016
|
Learning Area: iExplore
|
Learning Observed
|
Today during iExplore Nicole came to show me something she had created. She told me that she could put a cookie on the tray and that this would then stop the mess from going on the floor. Nicole had made an Easter Biscuit the day before and was looking forward to getting it later in the day. She then told me that she would eat it later in the day.
|
Evidence of learning
|
Nicole was concerned with the mess that the cookies would make so she created a container to solve this problem.
|
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
|
Nicole was making Connections between what she had made the day before and a possible problem that could occur. She was Thinking about how this problem could be solved. Nicole was able to Manage Herself to work at this in order to create an outcome to her problem.

Narrative Assessment - Reading - 3 March 2016
Learner: Nicole Learning Coach: Megan Croll Date: 3 March 2016
|
Learning Area: Literacy - Reading
|
Learning Observed
|
Nicole has been reading with me over the course of Term 1. She has been working on her knowledge of letter sounds to decode unfamiliar words. Nicole has also been discussing the text and retelling it in her own words. Today Nicole completed a PM Benchmark Reading Assessment with me and read a Yellow Level 8 text. She recognised many high frequency words in the text, read with expression and some fluency; searching for print details and self-correcting an error.
|
Evidence of learning
|
Nicole scored 87% on word accuracy with 14 errors and 1 self-correction, but struggled to finish reading the text. She answered 80% of the comprehension questions correctly. Nicole frequently got ‘b’ and ‘d’ mixed up.
|
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
|
Nicole is developing her Capabilities in Reading and with some support, is starting to Think more about what she is reading to ensure that it makes sense. She is increasing her ability to decode unfamiliar words (Using Language, Symbols and Text) and tries to Connect what she is reading to her own life experiences.

Nicole's Writing Narrative
Learner: Nicole Learning Coach: Mr Dyer Date: Week 3 - Term 1
| |||||||||
Learning Area: Writing
| |||||||||
Learning Observed
| |||||||||
We have hit the ground running and are already challenging ourselves to identify what makes writing effective and how we can capture this learning in our own writing. We have identified that our best writing comes from the heart and involves sharing our thoughts, wonderings and feelings about a particular subject. We have also begun exploring ‘Show’ not ‘Tell’ to develop imagery and depth in our writing, along with writing about our sensory responses to daily events. Finally, through selecting elements of Who, What, Why, When, Where and How, we can focus on different elements of our writing in more detail.
Nicole has begun to use some of the above writing techniques to make their writing #Oresome! She has the opportunity to write every day, and is involved in our author’s circles where they can seek advice and share their writing with myself and other learners. They are also invited to respond to areas for development at various stages of the writing process. It will be exciting to see how their writing develops over the course of the year starting from the example below which was one of their first pieces of independent writing.
On a Friday, Nicole contributes to our group blog. We share our thoughts, wonderings and feelings about the previous week and collaborate with the other writing groups before posting on our habitat blog. Be sure to check out these blogs when you can.

Evidence of learning
| |||||||||
This was Nicole’s first effort at writing this year. It will be exciting to see how she progresses as the year goes on.
| |||||||||
Key Competencies/Vision Principles
| |||||||||
Nicole has begun to show her capabilities in writing even at this early stage of the year. We are connecting with events from our lives to make writing real to us. We are doing a range of independent writing and more collaborative pieces.
| |||||||||
Next Learning Steps
| |||||||||
Nicole should continue to write from the heart and visit the Author’s circle for regular input into her writing. She is encouraged to share their writing with family members and also with other audiences at school and home.This will give her a chance to receive authentic feedback that can be used to make their next piece of writing even better.
